Experiment of One for One Week
An Experiment of One. For one week (okay, it’s actually going to be 8 days), I’m going to seriously modify my calorie intake and food choices.
I work 9PM to 5AM. I try to sleep from 6AM to 1PM or so. I will enjoy two meals each day. Meal one will be around 1:30-2:00PM and will consist of 3-4 eggs, a tablespoon of jam, sometimes with bacon added, sometimes not, and a 16-oz glass...
I've Given It Some More Thought
My Primal Living Diet for Life –
This eating plan is made up of two diet philosophies: the raw foods concept as espoused by Dr. Doug Graham of the 8-1-1rv camp, and Mark Sisson’s Primal Blueprint, a program of paleo/primal foods.
Being neither an absolutist in one or the other, but an agnostic in what is sometimes called ‘common knowledge,’ I am taking what I consider the best of both...
Andy Fossett's Self-description
I really love andy fossett’s self-description on his twitter site:
I’m a self-contained A-team. I not only love it when a plan comes together, but pity the fool when it doesn’t.
What you do is what matters, not what you think or say or plan.

12 Weeks to Go in 2010
There are twelve weeks left in this year (10/10/10 to 01/01/11).
I am making a commitment to end it in the best shape and condition of my life in the past 25 years.
By the use of a diet modified to take advantage of two seemingly opposed protocols, one being the 80/10/10 plan of Dr. Doug Graham, and the other the Primal Blueprint as proposed by Mark Sisson. I will be fusing the best ideas of...

Got to Go to Work
Interviewed with Yolanda Garcia (resident manager) and Javany (last name?) at the Brighton Park Apartments in Claremont, CA for a position as ‘courtesy patrol.’ The job is nights, most often 9PM to 5AM and occasionally 10PM to 6AM. The work days are Tuesday nights from Saturday nights, with Sunday and Monday off. Most holidays that fall on the day off will more than likely have to...
iPad - okay to buy
In November,2010, Apple is coming out with the ‘new & improved’ iPad. After reviewing the possibilities, what I use a computer for and what the iPad will be able to do, it makes the choice of my next purchase seem fairly easy.
If what I can do on the iPad includes my being able to use all the Google tools I currently use - Gmail, Gdocs, Gcal, Orcut, etc., then going with the...

What's For Breakfast?
Today I started making breakfast @ 9:30AM.
Put on a pot of coffee, got the bacon (1/2-lb) ready to microwave (5.5 minutes), and prepped a measuring cup for ‘instant’ grits with 2% milk instead of water (I like it a bit creamier). Put butter in the skillet and cracked three eggs to cook over-medium.
Served with 3 tsp of apricot jelly, I thoroughly enjoy my breakfast of “bricks...

Simplifying the experience
This is one of my rants. It’s going to be about how companies name their computers and how simplifying that naming is the way to go. It is also about how their websites should present the products. Yes, it’s pro Apple because they make the most sense with the names they picked for the Macs and no, I don’t care if you don’t agree. If you don’t like it you can stop...

August 2010 Is Coming - Time to Up The Effort
I’ve been a bit sluggish on the workout and diet program.
My mom has had some medical problems and I have spent a lot of time recently out with her as a chauffeur, waiting room companion, doctor’s assistant, helpful hearing partner and all-around ‘good son.’
But it has played havoc with my exercise plans and eating program. Not enough working out and way too many...

Thank You, Sam
Sam Spurlin offered at Twitter to review some blogs and/or websites to help improve them; I took him up on the offer.
One of the most obvious points he made was that for a blog called “Chuck’s Simple Life,” the background was very busy and cluttered (OMG! - not too much!) He was right. While my intent was to have a single large background of Captain America (my childhood...

Isn’t it absurd to focus so much energy on ‘practical’ skills that prep someone for a life of following instructions but relentlessly avoid the difficult work necessary to push someone to reinvent themselves into becoming someone who makes a difference?

METAMORPHOSIS - A CHANGE IN BODY & LIFESTYLE
METAMORPHOSIS – A Total Body and Life Makeover
Okay. Time to get serious. If I’m going to do this, now is the time to begin.
182 days. 26 weeks. 6 months. One-half of a year. Diet. Exercise. Lifestyle. Work and play habits. Relationships. Partnerships. What works, what doesn’t and what is tried.
Can an overweight, out-of-shape, recovering athlete really change his life and...

This is a repost from Karol Gajda -
The Karol Gajda Weight Loss Method (Results Guaranteed)
Here is how to lose weight. It’s very simple. Most people won’t do it because they’re baby asses, but this is how it works:
1) Stop eating when you’re walking.
2) Stop eating when you’re shopping.
3) Stop eating at the movies.
4) Stop eating in the car.

Martialist Minimalism
I’ve been reading various blogs and giving some thought to the actual philosophies they seem to hold as part of their ‘worldview.’
While my main focus (focuses? foci?) is to relate my creating a life aligned with simplicity, minimalism, as well as regaining my health and rebuilding an athlete’s physique from my younger years, I also have to be aware of how I live that...

A New Opportunity?
It’s Thursday, 06-24-2010. Good workout, good meal planing, and a relatively unproductive day as far as work goes.
As I’ve said before, I am a Community Services Counselor with Dignity Memorial, the nation’s largest network provider of cemetery, cremation and funeral services. It is a commission-only outside sales position - pre-need vs at-need. But with the current...

Workouts and Toss-outs
Progress… got fewer workouts in than I wanted this week. Did body conditioning exercises - push-ups, body rows, squats, lunges, some core work with planks and rollouts on my power wheel from Monkey Bar Gym.
I did not get any pool time, which is okay for this week because the planned yardage was so limited anyway. Got my walking-to-build-to-running done, including one mile-and-a-quarter...

Everyone Needs A Goal Or A Reason - Here's Mine
It’s true. Everyone needs a goal; a reason to do the things they want to accomplish. I want to lose body fat, build some lean muscle, and improve both my physique and my over-all health.
I have chosen to do this by dieting (adopting a paleo/primal eating habit) and exercising (making use of bodyweight exercise movements and some basic yoga asanas). But I have a long way to go to...
Happy Birthday, Buck!
Today, June 13th, is my father-in-law’s 87th birthday.
We went to the Old Spaghetti Factory in Monrovia (CA) for a family dinner on Saturday evening and had an assembly of 25 people - family came in from Arizona, Santa Barbara, Upland, etc. to celebrate with him. Spouse, children, grandchildren, and in-laws, all had a wonderful time sharing time, memories, dinner and a HUGE cake together.

Simplicity and Minimalism Today
As the title of my blog states, “Chuck’s Simple Life,” I am progressing in my goal to achieve greater simplicity in my life and working at eliminating the unnecessary in order to live a life of minimalism.
But this minimalism is to be a rational minimalism, and not meant to be a case of “I have fewer things that you, nah-nah-nah-nah-nah. While some try to get their...

Going Soda-Free and Starting Out Again
Today is June 8, 2010. My son is 22 years old today. My daughter turned 19 a week-and-a-half ago. One of my favorite quotes is “It is never too late to become what you were meant to be.” At least, I think that’s how it goes.
I have been soda-free for two days; drinking a lot of iced tea, filtered water, and so far, so good. The difficult part is it is so automatic to order...
If I Had My Life to Live Over
I’d like to make more mistakes next time.
I’d relax, I would limber up. I would be sillier than I have been this trip. I would take fewer things seriously. I would take more chances. I would climb more mountains and swim more rivers. I would eat more ice cream and less beans. I would perhaps have more actual troubles, but I’d have fewer imaginary ones.
You see, I’m...

GO BAREFOOT TODAY!
Interesting post from Mark Sisson over at Mark’s Daily Apple and the Primal Blueprint Insider: Go barefoot for a day!
Now, bearing in mind that I make my primary living as a Community Services Counselor performing outside sales in pre-need cemetery, cremation and funeral arrangements, I’m not sure I can pull this concept off.
True, I generally wear a golf shirt, khaki pants, and...

Let's Begin with the Diet
One week to go until June 2010.
This week I’ll be laying the foundation of two protocols in setting up the meal plan and diet I’ll be following for the next ten weeks - through the end of July 2010.
It is a combination of the paleo diet as espoused by Mark Sisson and his book the Primal Blueprint - see his material in greater detail at www.marksdailyapple.com - and a basically...
